    Simulation of Incidental Distribution Generation Curtailment to Maximize the Integration of Renewable Energy Generation in Power Systems

    Power system security is increasingly endangered due to novel power flow situations caused by the growing integration of distributed generation. Consequently, grid operators are forced to request the curtailment of distributed generators to ensure the compliance with operational limits more often. This research proposes a framework to simulate the incidental amount of renewable energy curtailment based on load flow analysis of the network. Real data from a 110 kV distribution network located in Germany are used to validate the proposed framework by implementing best practice curtailment approaches. Furthermore, novel operational concepts are investigated to improve the practical implementation of distributed generation curtailment. Specifically, smaller curtailment level increments, coordinated selection methods, and an extension of the n-1 security criterion are analyzed. Moreover, combinations of these concepts are considered to depict interdependencies between several operational aspects. The results quantify the potential of the proposed concepts to improve established grid operation practices by minimizing distributed generation curtailment and, thus, maximizing power system integration of renewable energies. In particular, the extension of the n-1 criterion offers significant potential to reduce curtailment by up to 94.8% through a more efficient utilization of grid capacities

    Technical and economic analysis of curative actions in distribution networks utilizing battery energy storage systems

    Renewable energy generation curtailment increases due to more frequently occurring congestions in power system operation. Post-contingency curative congestion management actions can reduce the necessity of renewable energy curtailment by enabling a more efficient utilization of transmission capacities. In this research, the potential of curative actions to substitute renewable energy curtailment is studied considering technical and economic criteria. Therefore, a novel pricing methodology for the market-based provision of curative actions is introduced. The method is based on the security constraint optimal power flow technique. Simulations are carried out on a modified version of the IEEE 14-bus network and a real-world 110 kV distribution network. Battery energy storage systems are implemented as an exemplary technology to provide curative actions. The developed method achieves a positive power system impact by reducing operational costs and maximizing renewable energy integration. Also, novel business models for merchant-owned battery energy storage systems are unveiled. The provision of curative actions further proves to be competitive to established battery storage applications. Additionally, results of different grid expansion scenarios of the 110 kV network reveal the need to coordinate power system planning and operation more extensively in the future

    Demand and efficiency of congestion management methods on the distribution grid level

    An entirely renewable energy system requires significant adaptions of existing electrical networks. Apart from conventional grid reinforcement and expansion, an efficient utilisation of existing grid capacities during operation is becoming more important. Grid operators use congestion management in order to ensure a secure supply of all network participants. In Germany, the curtailment of renewable energy generation units is increasingly being used for this purpose. This is critical with regards to the ambitious national climate targets. The present work thus analyses different approaches for reducing renewable energy curtailment, taking relevant grid security criteria into account. A method for simulating operational congestion management has been developed and applied to synthetic power systems as well as a real distribution grid region in Germany. Different approaches for the reduction of renewable energy curtailment are evaluated. Especially the utilisation of formerly unused grid capacities by using curative actions proves to be an efficient approach for minimising curtailment

    Applicability of the publicly available open_eGo dataset for network security analyses on the 110 kV distribution grid level

    The confidentiality of electrical network models owned by grid operators motivated the development of publicly available models and datasets in recent years. A use case specific validation of these models is necessary to assess the significance of simulation results. In this paper, the applicability of the open_eGo model for static power flow analyzes on the 110 kV distribution grid level is evaluated. Based on a preventive security constrained optimal power flow, the annual amount of distributed generation curtailment is derived. Additionally, the aggregated reactive power demand of the 110 kV network is analyzed. Results of the open_eGo model are compared to the proprietary grid operator model of the same region. The simulation results indicate that further improvements are made by considering the non n-1 secure grid connection of generation units on the 110 kV level. Furthermore, the capability of the open_eGo model to accurately represent the aggregated reactive power demand of the 110 kV distribution network is demonstrated

    Optimized Curtailment of Distributed Generators for the Provision of Congestion Management Services Considering Discrete Controllability

    Grid operation becomes a more challenging task due to the increasing amount of distributed generators in the system. Consequently, critical situations with violations of operational limits occur more frequently. Hence, grid operators have to take corrective countermeasures to ensure security of supply. This study presents a discrete optimisation approach to determine the optimal amount of distributed generator curtailment regarding multiple objectives. The proposed method is based on nonlinear AC load flow analysis of the network. The method is implemented into a modified version of the IEEE 14-bus test System and the necessary amount of generation curtailment to retain predefined operational limits is identified. Simulations are carried out for different contingency Scenarios and several possible increments of curtailment levels are compared. Results reveal the potential to reduce the total amount of power adjustments distinctly by using curtailment Levels with smaller step sizes compared to todays’ applied standards in German grid operation. Furthermore, the developed methodology enables distributed generators to be used for managing congestions of transformers connecting different voltage levels

    Mit ca. 6,5 TWh Ausfallarbeit wurde im Jahr 2019 ein neuer Höchstwert der engpassbedingten Abregelung von Erneuerbaren-Energien-Anlagen (EE-Anlagen) zur Stromerzeugung erreicht. Da der zur Integration grĂ¶ĂŸerer EE-Mengen notwendige Netzausbau lediglich mit großer zeitlicher Verzögerung umsetzbar ist, gilt es vermehrt, bestehende ÜbertragungskapazitĂ€ten möglichst effizient auszunutzen. Diese Arbeit untersucht drei verschiedene AnsĂ€tze zur Weiterentwicklung des Einspeisemanagements mit dem Ziel, die Menge an notwendiger Ausfallarbeit bei gleichzeitiger GewĂ€hrleistung der Netzsicherheit zu reduzieren. Die betrachteten AnsĂ€tze umfassen eine feinere GranularitĂ€t der Abregelungsstufen, die Implementierung netzebenenĂŒbergreifender OptimierungsansĂ€tze sowie eine kurative NetzbetriebsfĂŒhrung.     Application of Open Source Models and Data Sets for Energy System Research: (User) Experiences from Ongoing and Completed Projects

    This paper describes the application of open source models and publicly available data sets for research in the field of power grid operation. The experience on the implementation, modelling methodology and obtained results is presented based on three exemplary projects: HyReK, enera and HyCavMobil. The project HyReK is focused on modelling the network connection of a hybrid power plant in OpenModelica software and exporting the physical equation set to a computer algebra system for analytic evaluation of voltage dependency. In the projects enera and HyCavMobil, high-resolution models of power grids in delimited regions were developed using open access grid data provided by the open_eGo dataset. The presented approaches showed good applicability of the data sets and provided valuable insights for scientific questions and strategic modelling of power grids. Hence, a beneficial use of open source models and data sets is possible. Found limitations of the modelling approaches are given and discussed

    Optimized Power Flow Control to Minimize Congestion in a Modern Power System

    The growing integration of renewable energy sources (RES) into the power system causes congestion to occur more frequently. In order to reduce congestion in the short term and to make the utilization of the power system more efficient in the long term, power flow control (PFC) in the transmission system has been proposed. However, exemplary studies show that congestion will increase also in the distribution system if the transmission system is expanded. For this reason, the potential of PFC to reduce congestion in a model of a real 110 kV distribution system is investigated. Several Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) devices are optimized in terms of their number and placement in the power system, their size, control parameters, and costs, by using a Parallel Tempering approach as well as a greedy algorithm. Two optimization variants are considered, one reducing the number of degrees of freedom by integrating system knowledge while the other does not. It is found that near a critical grid state and disregarding costs, PFC can reduce congestion significantly (99.13%). When costs of the UPFCs are taken into account, PFC can reduce congestion by 73.2%. A basic economic analysis of the costs reveals that the usage of UPFCs is profitable.
